The Bellefield Primary and Infant School is the most beautiful school that I have seen in Jamaica. Nestled as if atop a mountain with a view of Mandeville’s bauxite processing plant like no other that I have seen. The school is 8 years old and a true testament to Jamaican architecture houses 550 plus students. Its open design allows for a secure garden enclosed by two stories of classrooms towards an open view. The architectural functionality also allows for the entire school body to meet for vitalized auditorium gatherings within a marginally sheltered open ampi-theatrical experience.
The Principal Mrs. Anderson, a strong quiet aesthetically resourceful lady who leads a dynamic committed and effective staff team.
Bellefield’s impressive building is certainly well set but for significant cavities. The teachers have created their own teaching resources that are tremendously effective but the school lacks science models and other teaching resources. There is a cafeteria but no chairs and tables for students to dine on so they eat in their classrooms.. The old school building is still being used as an infant school though the roof is badly damaged and there is only one window. There are no toys for the students and only a jungle gym in the play area.
The computer lab has only 4 working computers so classes have had to be suspended. We recently fully stocked the library with more than 2000 books. Some 40% of the students are at or below the poverty line so assisted breakfast and lunch programs are essential to sustaining progressive scholastic experiences.
The students are well behaved and pleasant. We assisted the school with some audio video equipment but their needs still remain far greater.
