The Woodlands school is at least 100 years old having molded thousands of Jamaicans who enjoy exceptional lives.
I first visited this school when I was 10 years old. It serves a rural community. I have an aunt who first started teaching here, friends also who attended. Woodlands is an amazing school. Its present principal Mr. Anderson is a consummate educator who is blessed with a remarkably committed staff who work tirelessly towards excellence.
Woodlands is off the beaten path and Jamaica’s educational budget tends to best support the first tier schools. Woodlands even with its proven academic and sports excellence tends to benefit marginally from primary funding.
UZAZI’s mandate is to support exceptional schools as every dollar spent towards supporting exceptional efforts are multiplied tenfold.
When I visited Woodlands in August of 2018, Mr. Anderson showed us the school. We were very impressed with his personal investment, the tremendous work that his teaching staff were committed to such excellence. The Woodlands Mathletes won an award Island wide and they chose to use the award money to buy computer supplies and establish a computer lab.
It also caught my attention that the principal’s office was filled with awards for academic and athletic excellence. Also files and filing cabinets were made it seem impossible that he could work effectively. I further noticed that a foundation for a building had been started and overgrown with weeds. The library is being used as a computer room and the few books remaining from the library are relegated to a closet in the now computer room.
We asked what were the schools needs and Mr. Anderson was good enough to provide us with a list.

We realized that the school had a space issue and given the creative use of containers in Jamaica we offered a container building that will use 4 containers in a “U” formation allowing for a fitted roof that would complete a cafetorium, library, staff lounge, principals office, tuck shop, Science room and storage room.
We have already delivered science models for teaching biology, 2 televisions and 3 projectors, 3 DVD’s, USB’s and sports equipment.
We are building an addition to The Woodlands Infant and Primary School in Manchester, Jamaica. The school has a long history of excellence producing exceptional professionals many who have migrated to Canada to become remarkable Canadians.
The building will allow the school to have Science Labs, a Library, Teachers Lounge, Tuck Shop and Cafetorium. After school it will double as a Community Centre in benefiting Mothers and youth within a 20 mile radius teaching Computing, Admin Skills, Health Care and providing for sports and recreative activities for the community.
The building will be mostly created from recycled and repurposed materials that otherwise might have been relegated to landfills in Canada.
The “U” Building will be primarily made up of 4 used containers that will hold materials such as student and admin desks and chairs, books, teaching resources and so much more (repurposed computers off lease and redirected from Canada’s landfills and recycle stations) that will benefit 5 schools.
UZAZI is also committed to furnishing 1 computer per classroom in the schools that it adopts.
The roof and steel support structures we hope to harvest from materials that may not be fit to sell from local industries.
Labor will be contributed by volunteers in Jamaica. The furnishings in the “U” Building will have been recycled and repurposed from Canada.
